Amlogic S905X specifications – featuring H265, 64 bits and VP9 decoding

AMLOGIC S905X is an advanced application processor designed for OTT/IP Set an advanced application processor designed for OTT/IP Set Top Box (STB) and high-end media box applications. It integrates a powerful CPU/GPU subsystem, a secured 4K video CODEC engine and a best-in-class HDR image processing pipeline with all major peripherals to form the ultimate low power multimedia AP.

The main system CPU is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU with L1 instruction/data cache for each core and a large unified L2 cache to improve system performance. In addition, the Cortex-A53 CPU includes the NEON SIMD co-processor to improve software media processing capability. The quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU can be overdriven to 2GHz and has a wide bus connecting to the memory sub-system.

The graphic subsystem consists of two graphic engines and a flexible video/graphic output pipeline. The five core ARM Mali-450 GPU including dual geometry processors (GP) and triple pixel processors (PP).The multi-core GPU processor handles all OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and OpenVG graphics programs, while the 2.5D graphics processor handles additional scaling, alpha, rotation and color space conversion operations. Together, the CPU and GPU handle all operating system, networking, user-interface and gaming related tasks. The video output pipeline includes advanced HDR10 and HLG HDR processing, REC709/BT2020 processing, motion adaptive edge enhancing de-interlacing, flexible programmable scalar, and many picture enhancement filters before passing the enhanced image to the video output ports.

Amlogic Video Engine (AVE-10) offloads the Cortex-A53 CPUs from all video CODEC processing.  It includes dedicated hardware video decoder and encoder. AVE-10 is capable of decoding 4Kx2K resolution video at 60fps with complete Trusted Video Path (TVP) for secure applications and supports full formats including MVC, MPEG-1/2/4, VC-1/WMV, AVS, AVS+, RealVideo, MJPEG streams, H.264, H265-10, VP9-10 and also JPEG pictures with no size limitation. The independent encoder is able to encode in JPEG or H.264 up to 1080p at 60fps.

Amlogic S905X integrates all standard audio/video input/output interfaces including a HDMI2.0a transmitter with 3D, HDR, CEC and HDCP 2.2 support, stereo audio DAC, a CVBS output, PCM, I2S and SPDIF digital audio input/output interfaces, and a stereo PDM digital MIC inputs.

The processor has rich advanced network and peripheral interfaces, including a 10/100M Ethernet MAC with FE PHY interface, dual USB 2.0 high-speed ports (one OTG and one HOST) and multiple SDIO/SD card controllers, UART, I2C, high-speed SPI and PWMs.

Standard development environment utilizing GNU/GCC Android tool chain is supported. The Amlogic S905X SoC is a good solution forAndroid TV Box.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the upcoming Amlogic S905M quad core Cortex A53 processor support 4K VP9 and 10-bit HEVC, but the silicon manufacturer seems to struggle with sticking with a name, as after the initial S908 part, they moved to S905M, before hopefully settling on Amlogic S905X, for which I received more information include a block diagram, and more detailed specifications.

These are most of the specifications currently available for Amlogic S905 processor with highlights in bold:

Amlogic S905X is a quad-core while Amlogic S912 is an octa-core chipset

CNX-Software has found the net an interesting document. It ‘a roadmap “internal”, and probably “confidential” Amlogic relative to programs of the company until mid-2016, where three new processors emerge: Amlogic S905X, S912 and Amlogic Amlogic S905D all based on quad and octa-core ARM Cortex A53 and able to support Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Since the three SoCs are currently under development, their specifications could change over the next few months but for all we know Amlogic S905X is a quad-core while Amlogic S912 is an octa-core, and both have a frequency of clock of 2.0GHz (1.5GHz and not as reported in the past). The first will support 2-layer PCBs, compared to other SoC latest Amlogic requiring 4-layer PCB, and this makes us think that will be directed at 4K TV Box (H.265 and VP9) very cheap. And again Amlogic S912 will not support USB 3.0, but three USB 2.0 interfaces.
Amlogic S905D is like Amlogic S905X and stands out only because it supports Gigabit Ethernet (RGMII), video input TS that would make it suitable for tuners and RGB interface, which instead brings him closer to the tablet. Here are below the summary characteristics of the new SoC Amlogic:

Amlogic S905 and S912, both 64 bit chipsets while Quad-core VS Octa-core

Amlogic adds two new chip line of CPU-specific media center and mini PC. S905 and S912 are carried out on the 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 design with 4 cores and production process to 28 nm.

All the technical details are not yet known (Amlogic them is exposing in CCBN China Content Broadcasting in these hours) but we know that S912 will support hardware decoding 4K @ 60 Hz file 10-bit HEVC and AVS +, both able to manage DTS and Dolby audio hardware, and that their video outputs are HDMI 2.0 with support DHCP 2.2. Promotional material about a good energy management for installations and PC keys stick.

On the software side, we will support Linux and SDK for Android 5.1. In short, S905 will be a SoC for the low-end sector and S912 will be used for media player quality. Mass production of the first is scheduled for Q2 2015 (by June) while S912 to wait until Q3 2015, probably this summer.

Hard to say whether S905 and S912 will replace the current S805 and S812 (the CPU of Neo-X8 H Plus) or if they will remain part of the offer low-cost company. The availability is not forthcoming, then we will be able to deepen.


Amlogic Roadmap Shows Three Updates about Amlogic S905X and S912

Today I received the roadmap from Amlogic and it includes the S912, as we know, S905 is on sampling stage, probably available for massive production after one or two weeks. But the most interesting is the recived information about S912, the next SoC from Amlogic. Accord to this manufacturer it should be ready (at least for sampling) at the first quart of 2016, what is really near. Some informations received from Amlogic revealed that the S912 whould be delayed to Q2 or even Q3, but their latest information is different than expected. If everything is as shown at their roadmap, we can also know more about this SoC. Then, these are the specifications provided byAmlogic for S912:

I am not sure if Amlogic will offer S912 at the time they are showing, but it should be good news if they can. It is good to know that Amlogic introduced USB 3.1 that features the called “SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbit/s” and backward compatible with 3.0 and 2.0 versions. S912’s GPU is unknown yet, but at least, Amlogic is talking about a coming MALI generation. It is well known Amlogic graphics and video performace is probably higher than others on the same range as Rockchip or Allwinner. Then, there are good news from this chinese manufacturer. Hope can see some new Android TV Box models based on this SoC soon at 2016.

Update: Someones said the S912 has been cancelled. Well, I could confirm with Amlogic that the S912 is NOT cancelled. Also Amlogic is going to launch a new SoC named S905X what is NOT a replacement for S912 but a “low cost” version of S905.

I had heard some news that Amlogic S912 was delayed, and even possibly canceled, while talks about a new S908 processor surfaced recently with support for VP9 up to 4K resolution. We now have some more details as I’ve received some more information about Amlogic product roadmap, and S908 should be renamed S905M [Update: The name will apparently be changed to S905X now, the saga continues…]

While Amlogic S905 and S905M will have a hard-limit to 2GB RAM, S912 will support dual channel memory and up to 4GB RAM. The two new processors will also support 4K VP9 video decoding, feature a DAC, HDMI 2.0a, support for HDR10 media profile and/or Dolby Vision. Both will also an embedded 10/100M PHY which will bring the cost down for devices with Fast Ethernet. Amlogic S912 will also support USB 3.0 interface and H.265 video encoding up to 1080p60. The document did not reveal the details about the GPU used in the two new processor, but it’s clear Amlogic S912 will have a powerful one good enough to be used in Android gaming console, and there have been some clues that S912 GPU could be Mali-T830 in the past.

The company has also improved DRM support in their latest processors, including S905 itself, with support for Google Widewine Level 1 & 3, Verimatrix Standard and Advanced, Microsoft Playready 2.0 (TVP and non TVP), Internet Marlin 1.7, and Vudu DRM. DRM is enabled thanks to “Secure OS”, but it’s not needed for the most basic DRM solutions such as Widewine Level 3, Verimatrix Standard, and  PlayReady 2.0 Non-TVP. So as we’ve seen recently that most Amlogic S905 TV box lack DRM support, a firmware upgrade should be enough to enable these, but any DRM scheme that requires Secure OS is likely impossible on devices that have not been flashed with Secure OS at the factory.

Amlogic S905M/S905X will come before Amlogic S912, but so far I don’t have exact ETA for either processors, so we’ll need to be patient.

When Amlogic S905 meets Rockchip RK3229, what will happen in the battle of low cost H.265/HDMI 2.0 SoC’s?

Amlogic S905 is one of the most popular SoC’s at the moment, mostly because of it’s 4K @ 60Hz and H.265 capabilities. There are devices on the market that range from $35 to $150, but the SoC was intended to fill a need for low cost Mini PC’s.

There’s a new SoC on the market that addresses the same market segment: Rockchip RK3229.
Announced at CES 2016, Rockchip RK3229 is now making it’s appearance and the first prices are unbelievably low for a H.265-capable device (see below).
In some respects, RK3229 is better than S905 and has a better price, but don’t keep your hopes up until someone actually tests these devices.
On paper, RK3229 has some impressive video decoding capabilities for a spectacular price, but the lack of faster connectivity (USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac) might prove to be a troublesome.
One major drawback for RK3229 when compared to Amlogic S905 is the OS – the difference between Android 4.4 and 5.1 is not to be ignored.

So I thought that a comparison between the chipsets is in order.

That means Amlogic S905X and S912 have the exact same video playback capabilities, although S912 will also support Dolby Vision HDR standard. The main differences are the eight Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz (instead of 4x A53 @ 1.5 GHz), and the more power ful Mali-T820MP3 GPU, as well as support for LCD panel (e.g. for tablets) thanks to an extra RGB interface. Finally S912 has three USB interfaces, instead of just two for S905X.

Amlogic 2016 roadmap shows S905X is scheduled for Q1 2016, and S912 for Q2 2016,  but it’s likely we need to add one or two more quarters before we get any Android 6.0 devices based on the new processors.
